Module 1: The Storyteller

Lesson 1.1: Life Experiences

Today's Goal: To talk about your general life experiences using the Present Perfect tense with ever and never.

Warm-up: What's the Question?

Let's start with a quick review of the Past Simple. Read the answers below. Your job is to ask the correct question for each one!

Example 1:
Answer: "I went to the cinema."
You ask: "What did you see?" (or "Where did you go?")

Example 2:
Answer: "I went last Saturday."
You ask: "When did you go?"

Your turn! What are the questions for these answers?

  • "I ate pizza last night."
  • "I saw a great film."
  • "I visited my cousins."
  • "Because I was tired."
  • "I bought a new book."

Grammar Focus: The Present Perfect

We use the Present Perfect to talk about experiences in our life. The important idea is "before now," not *when* it happened.

The Formula

The formula is: Subject + have/has + Past Participle

Positive (+) Negative (-) Question (?)
I have seen that film. I have not (haven't) seen that film. Have you seen that film?
She has been to Paris. She has not (hasn't) been to Paris. Has she been to Paris?

Key Words: ever and never

  • We use ever in questions to ask "at any time in your life?"
Example: "Have you ever eaten sushi?"

  • We use never in negative sentences to mean "at no time in my life."
Example: "I have never eaten sushi."

The Most Important Rule!

CRITICAL: We do NOT say *when* the action happened. The time is not specific.

Good: "I have been to London." (My life experience)

Bad: "I have been to London in 2010."
(If you say "in 2010", you must use the Past Simple: "I went to London in 2010.")

Let's Practice!

Activity 1: Past Participle Memory Game

Let's practice our irregular verbs. Click the cards to match the verb (Infinitive) with its Past Participle form. Good luck!

Activity 2: Sentence Builder

Look at this chart. You can build sentences by choosing one piece from each column.

Subject have / has ever / never Past Participle Rest of sentence
I have never eaten snails.
She has been to New York.
Have you ever seen a ghost?

Your turn: Can you make three of your own sentences about yourself?

Activity 3: Sentence Scramble (Drag & Drop)

Drag the words from the purple box into the grey box to make a correct sentence or question. Then click "Check".

Sentence 1:
you
ever
ridden
a horse?
Have
Sentence 2:
I
never
won
a competition.
have
Sentence 3:
My mother
has not
flown
in a plane.
Sentence 4:
Have
you
ever
been
to Japan?
Sentence 5:
He
has
never
seen

Conversation Time!

Your Experiences

Let's talk about you. First, take a minute to write 5 true sentences about yourself.

  • 3 sentences with "I have..."
  • 2 sentences with "I have never..."

(Example: "I have been to Germany." "I have never broken a bone.")

When you are ready, read your sentences!

Game: Two Truths and a Lie

Now, let's play a game!

  1. Think of three "life experiences" using the Present Perfect.
  2. Two of them must be TRUE.
  3. One of them must be a LIE (not true).
  4. Tell the class your three sentences. (e.g., "I have eaten octopus," "I have met a famous person," "I have lived in another country.")
  5. Your partner (or teacher) will ask you 1-2 follow-up questions for each sentence.
  6. They will try to guess which sentence is the lie!

Free Speaking Practice

Let's discuss these questions. Use the Present Perfect and Past Simple!

  • What is the most interesting city you have ever visited? (When did you go?)
  • What is the best food you have ever eaten? (Where did you eat it?)
  • Have you ever met a famous person? (Who was it?)
  • Have you ever been to a concert? (Who did you see?)
  • What's something you have never done, but you want to do?

Homework

Great job today! For your homework, please do these two tasks:

Task 1: Write 5 "Have you ever...?" questions to ask in our next class.

Task 2: Write a short paragraph (4-5 sentences) about a friend or family member. What interesting things have they done (or not done) in their life?

(Example: "My brother is very interesting. He has lived in 3 countries. He has worked as a teacher. He has never tried sushi, but he has eaten snails!...")
